What size does a puppy need?

Puppies almost always start in an XS. Every product in this collection comes in one. Measure the neck and the widest part of the chest rather than guessing from weight, and if they are between sizes, go up.

Growing fast? Re-check the fit every few weeks. You should be able to slide two fingers under the strap, no more.

How to Measure Your Puppy

  • Use a soft measuring tape for the most accurate results.
  • Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, behind the front legs.
  • Measure around the base of the neck where the collar would sit.
  • If between sizes, we recommend sizing up for comfort.

Why a step-in harness suits a puppy

A puppy who has never worn anything before will usually object to something going over their head. Our step-in design does not. You lay it flat, they step in, and the neck and chest clip closed. It is a calmer first experience, and calmer first experiences are what stop a dog hating their gear for the next decade.

Both the neck and the chest adjust, so there is real growing room built in. Most pups get several months out of an XS before moving up.

For walking we would put the lead on the harness rather than the collar. The collar is for their tag and their name.

Puppy Questions

What size collar does a puppy need?

An XS to start. Measure around the base of the neck where the collar sits and allow two fingers of room. Most puppies move into an S once fully grown, though small breeds often stay in an XS.

How long will an XS last before they grow out of it?

Usually around six months, though it varies a lot by breed.

For the Harness, both the neck and chest adjust, so there is room to let it out as they grow. Re-check the fit every few weeks during a growth spurt.

Should a puppy wear a collar or a harness?

Both, with the lead on the harness. A harness spreads the pull across the chest instead of a puppy’s neck, which matters while they are still learning not to pull. The collar carries their ID tag and engraved charm for everyday wear.

Can I get their name engraved?

Yes. Choose ‘Yes Engraving’ on any collar and we will engrave the charm with their name and your number. It turns the collar into their ID tag, so there is nothing extra jingling around.

When can a puppy start wearing a collar?

Most owners start around 8 weeks, once they are home and settling in. Short sessions indoors first, so they get used to the feel of it before you attach a lead.

Why do some collars not come in XS?

Our City range is vegan leather and starts at a size S, so it suits a fully grown dog better. Everything in this collection comes in an XS, which is why we have filtered it this way.
